Over 90 years of Dedication
In 1923, Calligaris started as a small artisanal business in the Manzano area of Italy when Antonio Calligaris produced his very first chair — the “Marocca” model. With wood from the surrounding mountains and straw from the Friulan lagoon, the Marocca was characterized by its sturdy wooden frame, the hand-woven rush seat and slightly curved legs.
Antonio passed the family-owned business onto his son, Romeo, in the 1930’s. During this time, the majority of the work was done by hand. After thirty years, Romeo Calligaris was ultimately able to develop his father’s once small, Italian furniture store into an innovative, industry-leading company.
By the 1990’s, Calligaris product offerings and furnishing solutions included chairs, tables, furniture, beds, sofas, furnishing and decorative accessories. Wood was no longer the only material by which Calligaris measured its vocation to innovation. The company began to work in metal, plastic, leather and glass.
Today Calligaris continues its legacy as an industry leader. With a strong focus on technology and development. Calligaris still finds its most important resource is the people who develop and manufacture its products, enabling the company to stay at the forefront of the furniture industry.
